The zip is the detail doing the work. A pull-on crop would sit closed, and you would need another layer to change the mood; a zip down the front lets you wear it neat to the collar or opened over the necktie. The crest and collar do the rest of the uniform cue, so you are not relying on the tartan alone. Worth knowing before you order: this is a short, close crop and a very short mini, so the midriff and a lot of thigh stay on show. If you want a longer skirt or a covered waist, this is not the one.
