The pleating on the cups is what you'd miss on a flat triangle. A smooth cup relies on cut and shade. Gathering the fabric adds texture so the top still has interest in a solid colour. The briefs stay simple, which is right - if both pieces were heavily ruched it would feel busy. Coverage is low at the hip, so if you want a boy-short this isn't the one.
