- Knitted open rather than woven tight - air moves through it, so it does not hold heat against you the way a lined kaftan does
- Ties at the neck instead of fastening - nothing to rust or jam after a day in salt water
- Split running up one side - you get a floor-length hem with none of the tripping
The reason this beats a kaftan is that it doesn't pretend to be a dress. A cover up has one job: getting you from the sand to a bar without changing, and looking deliberate while it does it. Mesh manages that because it moves and dries, where cotton goes heavy and stays damp against you. So the honest limitation is the obvious one. It's completely see-through, top to bottom. This isn't something you can wear on its own, and if that's what you were after, keep looking. Over a swimsuit you like, it's excellent.
